In the late fifteenth century, the world began to change rapidly. European explorers were beginning to venture farther from their homelands and to develop tools and techniques that would help them find their way. The Portuguese started the race for an all-water route to Asia when Prince Henry started a school for sailors and began sending expeditions farther and farther down the coast of Africa. The explorers established trade with West African kingdoms as they went. These efforts ultimately culminated in Vasco da Gama's journey to the sub-continent of India in 1498. Not to be outdone, Spain financed an Italian sailor, Christopher Columbus, who stumbled upon the New World in October 1492. In this unit we will examine the motivations of early explorers and the impact of the First Globalization on people living on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
