By 1775 a serious rift had developed between the thirteen colonies and the British government. The colonists complained they had no voice in Parliament. The colonists also pointed to taxes levied against them as an example of British abuse. The British believed they should tax the colonies, claiming their defense of the colonies during the French and Indian War was the reason for the taxes. For their part, the colonists were not used to the many laws Parliament passed that restricted their liberties. They also saw the king's Proclamation of 1763 as robbing them of the land they had fought for and won after the war with France. All of this tension would spark the flames of war at Lexington Green in Massachusetts. In this unit you will learn how the colonial delegates in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, created a Continental Army to defend America and why America voted to declare its independence from Great Britain.
