NetOp Netfilter
Protect your students from any inappropriate material when they use the internet as part of the educational program.
The challenge for schools Today’s school environment is characterized by the integration and use of IT. Schools are spending many resources on IT to make sure that all their students will be properly educated - by letting the students use IT during the daily classes and improving the teaching with the use of
IT. Some students bring their own laptops to school and log in to the school network. The use of IT raises some issues schools will have to address.
Some of those are:
- The Internet is constantly tempting the students to explore websites with all sorts of information. They will be confronted with offensive and inappropriate material of many different kinds. Clearly some students are not ready for this and they may not know how to handle it.
- By mistake, students visit sites that seem safe but in fact are not, and often these sites are downloading malware to the endpoint PC without the students knowing about it. The risk is that the school network gets infected, data gets corrupted, and it may disturb the entire schoolwork.
- Many students use IT to communicate with each other. Too often someone is being harassed on the Internet or by chat and messenger programs. This may not only concern students but also teachers. All of the above issues will most likely create disturbances in lessons, or during the day when students use the Internet in between classes. Since schools are obliged to prevent students from being faced with offensive and inappropriate material, they try their best to secure the network. It can be a demanding job to maintain white and black lists on a daily basis. And still there’s a risk that the access to the internet gets
- too tied down, leaving little room for free information search.
Features:
- A tool to enforce the school internet policy Increases learning through classes
- Very easy to use, and no constant updates
- Superior combination of technologies
- Protect the school image in the public
- Reduce non related school Internet usage
- Secondary shield against – spyware, spam, malicious code etc
- Release bandwidth for legitimate school use
Benefits
In 2005, the Internet was estimated to consist of 11.5 billion URLs. Today the Internet has more than 18 billion URLs. During the last 3 years 6.5 billion new sites were added.
That is:
More than 4000 new URL’s per minute.
Approx 250.000 new sites per hour.
It is therefore evident that it is practically impossible to keep any URL database up to date!
- No need for daily updates with NNF because of cutting edge technology and no URL database/ black list look up. So easy to stay ahead and proactive.
- Proactively enforce your school or company security policy - reduce risk & cost with NetOp Netfilter.
- Make segments, schedules and profiles and log anonymously, segmented, or on IP’s. Anonymous logging protects the privacy of users (who, when & how). It also logs information that is not blocked.
- Powerful and easy reporting tools - get the full picture of your network.
- Users receive a warning message before accessing a “banned” Site, for a preventive effect.
- Increase security - Most malware/virus is placed on websites with porn, MP3’s etc. – prevents access, increases security and often prevents viruses.
- Block for bandwidth consuming programs such as IM, chat and P2P. Also block other .exe programs specified by you and block the download of large
files and MP3 files.
Key features
- No updates, no hassle, no slip-ups.
NetOp Netfilter is a 100% dynamic content filtering solution based on artificial intelligence utilizing a combination of advanced image, text and
behavior analysis.
The technology is built to scale from filtering very few workstations to thousands of workstations. By simply adding filter servers managed
from central site admin servers, the functionality can be expanded to suit the size and growth of the individual company.
- Dynamic analysis and filtering.
The technology is built on 100% dynamic analysis methods obtaining the advantage of always being able to categorize incoming content, without relying on daily or weekly updates on URL lists.
In 2005, the Internet was estimated to consist of 11.5 billion URL’s. Today the Internet has more than 18 billion URLs. If this fact is added to the volatile nature of the Internet where thousands of URLs change, are deleted or added every minute and hour, it is evident that it is practically impossible to keep any URL database up to date. With the dynamic nature of NetOp Netfilter, this problem is non existing. The accuracy of the categorization is unique and will supply the correct verdicts inevitably, protecting the students and teachers from making mistakes, protecting the image image and providing an accurate log of the internet behavior to the school administration.
- Blocks IM, Chat, P2P, Streaming Audio and Video and much more.
NetOp Netfilter has a built in application control, to stop IM, Chat, P2P and other specified .exe programs, so students are unable to start any of these programs on the workstation and avoid the risks associated by using IM, Chat and P2P. Also streaming audio and video can be controlled to avoid the misuse of bandwidth.
- Image/Flash/Text/Behavior analysis.
NetOp Netfilter is unique in its technology, because it is analyzes images, text and the individual behavior. All results from these individual analysis engines are fed into an artificial intelligence engine, giving the final verdict and categorization of the content of an individual webpage.
- Protection around the clock.
The one of its kind filtering technology of NetOp Netfilter is available 24 hours, 7 days a week, and 52 weeks per year, no matter if the endpoint is inside or outside the school network. The implemented company or school Internet policy is therefore always in effect.
- Blocks MP3 files and large files.
Detect the network load performance from downloads of MP3 files and any other large files, where the size is set by the school. If downloads of illegal music and other illegal files are an issue, or simply because it takes bandwidth, the activities can be blocked to free up network load.
How Does It Work?
Every time a student browses the internet, all communication goes through the NetOp Netfilter which works as a proxy server. The communication is analyzed and categorized by NetOp Netfilter using analysis based on a combination of:
text + images + user behavior (e.g. if user often searches for pornography, MP3’s etc.) + artificial intelligence to evaluate a page.
This allows the administrator to proactively implement rules based on the school’s IT-policy. Those rules control the access to internet resources using internet filtering software. NetOp Netfilter is therefore a strong tool for schools that want to make sure that their IT policies are enforced, and not just words. NetOp Netfilter’s statistics reports help you get the full picture of internet traffic.
The school defines polices and uses Netfilter to enforce them. Students that log onto the school network with their own laptop will be assigned to the policies.
Netfilter prevents the students from getting access to sites (categories) like: pornographic, dating, gambling and illegal sites
Netfilter prevents the students from using certain Programs such as: IM, chat, P2P, and any other .exe program
*Large companies (2000+ users) should use SQL version
*Below 2000 users, XML is generally recommended
