Retrospect has won numerous awards and broad industry acclaim by addressing the unique challenges faced by SMBs and distributed enterprises in these critical areas:

  • Protects servers, business-critical applications, desktops, and notebooks
  • Backs up Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Solaris, and NetWare computers to a Windows computer
  • Easy to set up and manage
  • No need for weekly full backups
  • Simplified management of backup media
  • Disk-to-disk-to-tape backups
  • Highest level of security for backup media
  • Disaster recovery

EMC Retrospect delivers powerful yet easy-to-use data protection for your servers, 24x7 applications, desktops, and notebooks. It protects your business from data loss due to user error, computer failure, or site-wide disasters. Retrospect protects millions of computers world-wide and consistently earns top awards and broad industry acclaim for its unique patented technology.

Easy to set up and manage
Robust data protection doesn’t have to be complex. Retrospect’s intuitive wizards get you up and running quickly. Backup operations are automatically adjusted to ensure that all computers are protected without requiring manual intervention. With Retrospect there is no need to write new backup scripts each day to keep backups running smoothly. And user-initiated restores enable end users to perform fast onsite recovery of their data without putting a strain on IT resources.

Avoid weekly full backups
Unlike other backup applications, Retrospect delivers fast incremental backups while still providing accurate restores. Retrospect does this by creating a list of hard drive contents during each backup. Retrospect later uses this list to select the exact data necessary to perform an accurate restore to a prior point in time. With Retrospect you get a perfect restore every time. Other software doesn’t utilize such a list and therefore can only provide an accurate restore to the day a full backup was performed.

Simplifies management of backup media
Traditional backup software requires a complex strategy to protect against failure of backup media or a site-wide disaster. Multiple sets of tapes must be created, tracked, and rotated offsite in a rigid and unforgiving manual process. Retrospect eliminates complex tape rotation strategies. Simply create two sets of tapes. Keep one set onsite for backups and restores. Send the other offsite for safety. Rotating tape sets is easy and fast.

Disk-to-disk-to-tape backups
Retrospect protects more computers in less time when utilizing disk as a backup destination. For offsite protection, create synthetic full sets of tapes by rapidly streaming data from the backup disk, eliminating the need to perform another backup over the network so applications and users remain unaffected. Establish a policy that retains a set number of backups and automatically removes older data to make room for newer backups. You never have to perform a full backup again.

Highest level of security for backup media
Retrospect delivers the strongest possible security for your backup media using U.S. government-certified 128-bit and 256-bit AES encryption. With AES encryption, unauthorized individuals cannot access information stored on backup media in the event that it is lost, stolen, or misplaced.

Disaster recovery
During the normal course of performing backups, Retrospect automatically gathers all the necessary information—including the operating system, applications, and all settings—to completely restore a computer that has failed. Simply create a disaster recovery (DR) CD from the backup media when needed. With Retrospect there is no need to go through the wasteful and time-consuming process of periodically creating new DR CDs for every computer.

Optional Add-ons (not included)

The capabilities of Retrospect can be extended with add-ons to meet specific needs. Add-ons are optional with most editions of Retrospect, but are included in some editions. For continued functionality, add-ons must be upgraded at the time you upgrade your base product. To check the availability of add-on products with various editions of Retrospect, please see the table below.

Open File Backup Unlimited (Optional, not included)
The Open File Backup Unlimited add-on protects Windows files (on NTFS file systems) that are open and in use. It protects files on multiple volumes as well as business-critical server applications that run 24 hours a day including e-mail, database, CRM, accounting, or proprietary applications. For desktop and notebook computers, backups can take place while e-mail applications and other applications are in use. A single Open File Backup Unlimited add-on license protects the Retrospect backup server and all networked client computers.

Open File Backup 3 Server (Optional, not included)
The Open File Backup 3 Server add-on protects Windows files (on NTFS file systems) that are open and in use. It protects files on multiple volumes as well as business-critical server applications that run 24 hours a day including e-mail, database, CRM, accounting, or proprietary applications. The Open File Backup 3 Server add-on license protects the Retrospect backup server and two networked server client. To protect network server clients, this add-on must be used with Retrospect Multi Server edition or a Retrospect for Windows server-level product with two server client licenses.

User Initiated Restore (Optional, not included)
The User Initiated Restore add-on allows users on Windows, Mac OS X, and Red Hat Linux clients who were backed up over a network to restore their lost or delete files from the backup server hard disk without assistance from IT personnel. Users locate and recover files and folders via a user-friendly Web browser interface. User-initiated restores enable employees to perform fast onsite recovery of their data without putting a strain on IT resources and without requiring expertise in backup technology. This feature is especially useful for businesses that protect a large number of desktop and notebook computers.

Disaster Recovery (Optional, not included)
The Disaster Recovery add-on enables a bare metal system recovery for any Windows computers that are being backed up, avoiding time-consuming software installation and reconfiguration. Retrospect gathers the data required for disaster recovery as a normal part of the back up process and stores the required information on the backup media. Retrospect is unique in its ability to create a disaster recovery (DR) CD for any point in time when an incremental backup was performed. If a disaster occurs, Retrospect can create a DR CD, even for a computer that is no longer working. When a computer boots from the DR CD, it loads the operating system, drivers, and the Retrospect application or client. Then all files, folder, applications, and settings can be restored from the backup media. Even systems with RAID controllers, which require low-level device drivers, are supported. A single Disaster Recovery add-on license protects the Retrospect backup server and all networked client computers.

Advanced Tape Support (Optional, not included)
The Advanced Tape Support add-on improves backup times to tape libraries and autoloaders by utilizing multiple tape drives in parallel, including stand-alone drives, drives in libraries, or drives in autoloaders. The Advanced Tape Support add-on is licensed for use on one Retrospect-based backup server, and it supports any number of tape drives attached to that computer. This add-on is not required for the following tape support features, which are already built into the Retrospect product: advanced support for barcodes and cleaning tapes, sequential use of tape drives, and multiple simultaneous operations when backing up to hard drives.

Microsoft SQL Server Agent (Optional, not included)
The Microsoft SQL Server Agent add-on provides fast, precise backups of Microsoft SQL 2000 Server and Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 while online. It can perform full backups, or differential, log, and log no truncate backups, which are significantly faster because only new and changed data needs to be backed up. The Microsoft SQL Server Agent add-on is designed to automatically restore a SQL server to a specific point in time, eliminating the complex manual procedures that are otherwise required to restore the SQL server. The Microsoft SQL Server Agent add-on is licensed for use on one SQL server. The SQL server must be running either the Retrospect application or the Retrospect Client.

Microsoft Exchange Server Agent (Optional, not included)
The Exchange Server Agent add-on provides fast, precise backups of Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, Exchange Server 2003, and Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 while online. It can perform full, differential, or log/incremental backups at a database, individual mailbox, or message level to speed backup operations. The Exchange Agent add-on is designed to automatically restore an Exchange server to a specific point in time, eliminating the complex manual procedures that are otherwise required to restore e-mail environments. Retrospect can restore the entire Exchange database, an individual public folder, a mailbox, or a single e-mail. The Exchange Agent add-on is licensed for use on one Exchange server and includes a server client license.

Add-on Value Package (Optional, not included)
The Add-on Value Package is a cost-effective way to purchase multiple Retrospect add-ons. It includes the Open File Backup, Disaster Recovery, Advanced Tape Support, Microsoft SQL Server Agent, Microsoft Exchange Server Agent, and User Initiated Restore add-ons.

Add-on Value Package SBS (Optional, not included)
The Add-on Value Package SBS is a cost-effective way to purchase multiple Retrospect add-ons that are not included in the base product. It includes the Open File Backup, Disaster Recovery, Advanced Tape Support, Microsoft SQL Server Agent, Microsoft Exchange Server Agent, and User Initiated Restore add-ons.
