Reading Rodeo from Kidsmart
Reading Rodeo is designed for pre-readers and readers needing extra practice with auditory discrimination as well as matching uppercase to lowercase letters. (2 different exercises) Discriminating among consonant sounds is purely an auditory skill. However, tying the sound of a consonant to the written letter is a blend of auditory and visual skills, which is exactly what the Cactus Kid is all about!
In the Consonant sessions, a computer keyboard appears and the student selects a consonant to practice with. Four pictures appear, all beginning with the selected consonant, along with the upper and lowercase letter and the Cactus Kid. The announcer pronounces the words, and asks the student to repeat the words. Next, a series of four pictures are presented, some from the initial screen, and some beginning with different consonants. The student must mark each picture “y” for yes or “n” for no, depending on whether the word/picture begins with the chosen consonant. Right answers are “lasso-ed” by the Cactus Kid and given a verbal affirmation. Incorrect answers are met with “Sorry Partner.” In the matching exercises, lowercase letters are presented on the screen, and the student must select the matching uppercase letter on the keyboard. Answers are handled in the same way as above. The program Contains over 100 artist-drawn pictures to give students practice distinguishing between words beginning with different initial consonant sounds. A great tool for pre-readers and beginning readers to hone their auditory discrimination skill, which is one of the major foundation skills on which to build their overall reading skill/competency.
