Absorb Electronics is an on-screen course for Electronics, Systems & Control and Design and Technology.
This course uses Crocodile Clips' Technology simulations and interactive animations, moving from simple circuits through to complex real-life applications.
There are both theory and practical lessons, with guided examples and project suggestions.
Absorb Electronics is written by Bill Phillips, an electronics expert and author of the acclaimed textbooks 'Discovering Electronics'.
The units fall into two types.
- First, a theory unit introduces the electronic principles and their characteristics, and how they are applied.
- Next, a practical unit offers the chance to apply the principles in the lab. These practical lessons put the theory into context, with guided examples and instructions for real projects.
The key to Absorb courseware is allowing students to think for themselves, rather than simply learning facts. Investigations are used in each unit, with the student operating controls and interpreting results or data. Questions link with these investigations, focusing the student on key learning objectives.
Many key principles are animated in Absorb Electronics with a clean and accessible style being used to illustrate the concept. They show how devices work, demonstrate physical principles and offer useful tools.
Absorb Electronics also includes simulations created in Crocodile Technology. These allow circuits to be accurately modelled, with measurement and analysis of the circuit's output.
Each unit has a 'Tools' menu. This offers access to functions which are useful in the course. The tools are only accessible when you have Absorb Electronics installed. Other tools include an Amplitude Calculator, a Frequency-Period Calculator, an Ohm's Law Calculator and a Thermistor Calculator.
Each unit has a media gallery. One example is the interactive elements and these are shown on one page. It lets you use them in two ways: either alone, viewed full-screen for projection in front of a class, or in context within a unit. This lets you incorporate the hundreds of top-quality interactive elements into your own teaching however you choose, as well as having them as part of the complete course. When using the media in-context, they can still be temporarily expanded to a full-screen view, and they can be floated above the text to ensure that they're always visible.
Each unit has questions within the narrative, designed to break up the text and check understanding of what has been covered. They can be used as a basis for classroom discussion while presenting on a whiteboard, or to help involve pupils studying alone. Each unit also has a set of test questions at the end. These cover what has been studied in the unit.
Absorb Electronics has 6 sections, each consisting of several units. Each unit has questions within the narrative, designed to break up the text and check understanding of what has been covered. Each unit is suitable for a lesson lasting around 1 hour, and can be broken into smaller parts.
