This unit involves the effects of industrialization in America in the last four decades of the nineteenth century. The lesson topics for each of the three grade levels concern three basic themes. The first is the study of the powerful industries that developed during this time. Lessons on the steel, oil and banking industry focus on the dynamic individuals who created these mammoth industries and how they came to be powerful forces for change in America. The careers of Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and J.P. Morgan are featured in the unit. The other themes focus on the development of the labor movement, where workers in the new industries organized to fight for better wages and working conditions, and the so-called settlement of the West. Modern technology made the Great Plains desirable for millions of would-be farmers from east of the Mississippi River.
