Science Court: Inertia from Tom Snyder Productions

The fun and easy way to teach fundamental science concepts!

Science Court: Inertia is part of the Science Court series.

The Science Court series introduces core science concepts and models good scientific practice with this fun and engaging series that mixes animated courtroom drama, hands-on science activities, and humor. As each case unfolds, students examine the facts and perform hands-on experiments to help them predict the verdict. By discussing their findings in groups and as a class, students are able to articulate and comprehend challenging science topics.

In Science Court: Inertia, the famous motion picture star, Cramwood, accuses his old friend, Jenkins, of selling him a BAAD bike accessory that whacks him in the head. He gets a bump on the back of his head every time he applies the bicycle brakes. Is Jenkins trying to make Cramwood look bad?

Over the course of the trial, students will learn:

  • Definitions of:
    • Newton's first law of motion
    • Mass
    • Inertia
    • Friction
  • How to set up experiments to:
    • Observe the effects of inertia on an object inside a moving vehicle
    • Explore the effect of friction on a moving object
    • Observe the relationship between mass and inertia
  • How to work as a team by:
    • Becoming members of an interdependent group
    • Listening and talking with others
    • Sharing a common goal

In addition, students will be able to:
  • Demonstrate Newton's first law of motion
  • Explain why some objects have more inertia than others
  • Use inertia to explain the importance of wearing a seat belt in a moving car
  • Provide examples of forces that get objects moving and slow them down
