Fraction Collection Bundle from Sunburst
Interactive demonstrations and practice activities build skills and understanding of fractions and part-number concepts.
The following titles are contained in this bundle:
Fraction Operations
Students build on the concepts of fraction meaning and equivalence as they learn to operate with fractions. Students see the purpose of constructing same size parts when they add and subtract fractions. They gain informal experience multiplying fractions by creating area models to find a fraction of a fraction. Students use a measuring tool to understand the concept behind the division of fractions. They are asked to describe "the action of the operation" in personalized electronic journals, where examples of these activities can be saved.
Equivalent Fractions
Students strengthen their understanding of fractions by focusing on the concept that every fraction can be named in many different but equivalent ways. Through onscreen activities based on engaging multicultural themes, students determine equivalent fractions using concrete objects and visual diagrams. By dividing area, comparing distances in a fraction chart, and trading parts, students develop a firm understanding of equivalency and can begin to mentally create equivalent fractions and experiment with fraction operations. Work can be saved in personalized journals, which actively encourage students to communicate effectively about mathematics.
Representing Fractions
In this investigation, a garden theme is used to represent the relationship between a whole and its parts. Students develop an understanding of fractions learning to identify and use fractions in both symbolic and visual representations. By manipulating area models, distance models, and set models, students learn different ways to represent fractions. With this program, students gain the foundation for future work in equivalence and operations, and with decimals and proportion. Students can demonstrate their knowledge in the journal section of the program.
