OVERVIEW
As words move along a conveyor belt, children zap misspelled words and allow correctly spelled words to pass. Helps students identify misspelled words and improve their own spelling. Errors are reviewed. Contains a list of 1300 words divided into six difficulty levels. Can also create, edit, save, and load your own word lists within the program.
IMPROVEMENT
Word Zapper helps students identify misspelled words and improve their own spelling. As words move along a conveyor belt, children use the lively word zapping machine to zap misspelled words and allow correctly spelled words to pass. Work continues until the player has made ten errors or has scored 1000 points (50 correct words). Then, errors are reviewed, and the player correctly types each of the words on which an error was made. A Top Spellers Chart displays scores and gives special recognition to students who make few or no errors.
FLEXIBLE
Word Zapper contains a list of 1300 words divided into six difficulty levels intended for use in grades two through six. The speed at which the conveyor belt moves words across the screen is controlled by the student. As students work with Word Zapper, they can find their own comfort levels with regard to both word difficulty and rapidity of action. Then, their attention is focused on the words at those levels which they themselves find difficult.
Importantly, teachers or interested students can create their own word lists for use with the word zapper machine. Thus, for example, teachers can develop spelling exercises based on specialized science or social studies vocabulary; or, they can enter word lists from their own spelling texts. Teachers can encourage students to make their own word lists to challenge other students or the entire class. If student interest changes from simply earning high scores to creating challenging new word lists, the students at the computers will be truly involved with spelling and words.
FUN
This program is an effective and enjoyable learning tool either in a computer lab or at a classroom learning station. Running Word Zapper (with sound on) on many computers at once in a lab is fun. Noisy, yes... but fun!
