The Core Reading with Jazzles program is a comprehensive literacy development program for young children, ESL, and special needs students. The multi-sensory approach, incorporating visual, auditory, and kinetic activities engages language learners and adapts to a wide range of learning needs.
The program supports vocabulary development for over 1000 words representing about 75% of English language words in the most high fluency and sight word lists. However, this is more than a mere vocabulary program – it is a balanced and comprehensive reading curriculum that develops fluency and language comprehension including understanding of words in context, phonemic awareness, use of phonics, and use of grammatical structures.
Letter-based & Song-based: This program is organized around interactive Flash-based Jazzles resource files created for each letter of the alphabet. While the learning of letters and associated words can be done in any sequence, the program groups the letters and offers a sequenced approach based on language learning research.
The use of music and rhyme has a long history of engaging young children and supporting language development. The starting point for each letter is a unique letter song with animated characters acting out the songs’ lyrics. The collection of songs covers a diverse range of musical styles with 22 distinctive styles including rhythm and blues, rock, swing, Dixieland, country, Cha Cha, mambo, and Latin Pasadoble.
After learning the song, there is a progression of interactive files that task learners to sing, read, and listen to the song lyrics. This rich diversity in music supports dancing, clapping, tapping, and other kinetic activity that differs for each song. Children can also role play the animated characters. Supporting the song-based learning are a variety of interactive games and activities that support development not only of literacy skills but also of memory and reasoning skills. The program also includes printable resources for teachers to use selectively where appropriate.
Core Reading with Jazzles is designed for classroom use with an interactive whiteboard or with a simple projector and screen. The software includes all teaching objects as well as a Teachers’ Manual with suggested lesson plans and specific guidance on ideas for teaching students with different learning needs. Ideas for dramatic performances and incorporating crafts, math, vocabulary, and concepts are included. The software is also available to students online so that students can listen to the songs and do their language building activities at home.
