CatWorks: Cat dissection Simulation from ScienceWorks
Designed for more advanced students, CatWorks© offers the user an opportunity to perform exciting, highly accurate, electronic dissections of the common domestic cat. Through the use of special cursors and buttons, the user is actually able to "dissect" nearly all areas of the cat's anatomy. Included, also, are QuickTime© movies showing selected portions of actual dissections along with voice descriptions of the procedures being performed.
Schematic graphics are so real to life, one would believe them to be photos - but they are printable representations capable of being rendered with or without labels. A full glossary, including pronunciations, is available at all times. Users may also take on-line quizzes and do electronic "lab practicals." These features make CatWorks© an invaluable tool, either as a stand-alone application or as a pre-post lab exercise.
So that CatWorks© can offer a complete experience for the advanced user, a well documented histology section is included that contains high-quality, digitized, microscopic images of important tissues and structures.
CatWorks© certainly offers an excellent alternative to sacrificing an animal. It can serve as a perfect pre-lab activity or post-lab followup to other types of laboratory activities and without the dangers of preservatives and sharp instruments. Without a doubt, this will rapidly become a "must-have" item in every well-equipped science classroom. Recommended for grades 10 and above.
