Modelling Toolkit
Explore predictions and decision making through a series of five core activities, each activity having three levels. Developed by the IT Learning Exchange.
Overview
2Simple Modelling Toolkit is designed for Key Stage 1 and the Foundation stage. It comprises five different modelling activities, each with three differentiated levels, known as tasks that allow children to predict, explore and make decisions. Each task progresses in difficulty but is linked to the previous task. The Software Publishers state that each activity has been designed to support core subject areas and can also be used to teach ICT or as a resource to teach Literacy/English. For example in literacy there are activities on listening to and following instructions, story writing and character development and in numeracy activities for shape and space, symmetry, problem solving, position and movement and money. It can also be used to link across other curriculum subjects such as Art, Design & Technology and Geography.
The program incorporates a number of teacher options that allow teachers to direct tasks and adopt flexible and creative approaches to support teaching and learning. There are also resources linked to the activities to use away from the computer.
The strength of the software is that it does not require children to read large amounts of text and where text occurs it is always supported by simple and clear instructions. There are also audio instructions at the beginning of each task in French, Punjabi, Spanish, Bengali, Sylheti or Welsh as well as English, thus giving extra support for children for whom English is a second language. This software would be really useful for delivering the Modelling strand of ICT in Key Stage 1 and the Foundation stage.
