| Other American wars pale in comparison to the Civil War. No war, before or since, has cost as many American lives and as much destruction of American property. In this unit, CICERO presents a variety of materials, including multiple lessons at each grade level. The first lesson involves Lincoln's First Inaugural Address. This emotionally charged event gives students a picture of Lincoln's mind as he becomes president with a civil war looming. Choosing words carefully, he is committed to keeping the Union together and must convince the South that secession will be met with armed force. At the same time, Lincoln attempted to keep the door open to peaceful reconciliation. Also in this unit are lessons on the Emancipation Proclamation, where Lincoln's stated goals of the war are changed. The original goal of preserving the Union is joined by the goal of abolishing slavery.
